Subterranean Termites

There are three catagories of termites referred to when referring to termite infestations: dampwood, drywood and subterranean. Dampwood termites can generally be found in damp logs or trees (dead or living). Drywood termites thrive on water that they obtain from the wood found in the areas that they inhabit. Subterranean termites are those that dwell in the ground and require contact with soil or a constant source of moisture. Furthermore termites are the main threat to timber and as such, are the most common termite infestations that Pest Assured are contacted about.

Cause for concern

Recent industry surveys suggest that approximately one third of all unprotected properties are at risk of being attacked by subterranean termites. They can cause major structural damage to both domestic and commercial buildings and tend to occur mostly within urban areas. As it stands, subterranean termites cause more damage to Australia properties than any natural disasters we have faced.

What you can do to protect your home or business

One of the most important things to do when you find an infestation of subterranean termites in or around your property is to leave them alone. When termites are located they must not be disturbed! If termites are disturbed they will alert the rest of the colony do a different location. The new location will be very hard to detect as subterranean termites will track back underground. Termites posses extraordinary survival instincts. Contacting your local pest control expert is of the utmost importance to ensure that your subterranean termite problem is handled effectively and with the greatest of care.
